Welcome

Prelude “’Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus” William J. Kirkpatrick

Call to Worship Psalm 31:1-3; 14; 19; 24
One: In you, Lord, we have taken refuge.
All: You are our rock and our fortress, for the sake of your name, lead and guide us.
One: We trust in you, Lord; we say, “You are our God.”
All: How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who revere you, on those who take refuge in you. We will be strong and take heart, because we hope in the Lord.

Opening Prayer

Hymn (on video) “Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us”

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. One: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

Waving of the Peace

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession followed by time of Silent Confession
It is the big delusion, the height of arrogance, the seductive trap, the big, dark danger. It leads nowhere good. Its destiny is death. It sat at the center of the disaster in the garden. It propelled the sad rebellion of Adam and Eve. It tempts us all again and again in situation after situation, in relationship after relationship. We fall into thinking what multitudes of our lost forefathers thought. We buy into this one fateful thought, that perhaps we are smarter than God, that maybe our way is better than his way. Only Grace can deliver the deluded from the danger that they are to themselves.
Silent Confession. (Paul David Tripp, New Morning Mercies)

Assurance of Forgiveness

Glory Be to God in Song 582 “Glory to God”
Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me,
and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me,
and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.
World without end, without end. Amen. (sing 3 times)
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be. Amen.

Scripture Lesson Genesis 2:5-7; 3:1-7

Sermon The Supremes and the Temptations The Rev. Cindy Wilcox

Affirmation of Faith (in unison) The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Introduction to the Offering

Choral Anthem (on video) “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”

Doxology Old 100th
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
