Welcome and Announcements

Prelude “Consolation Op. 30, No. 3” Felix Mendelssohn

Responsive Call to Worship

One: We come together to observe the Sabbath day
All: and keep it holy.
One: Be still and know that God is. (pause) We worship the Living Lord.
All: Renew us by your Spirit, we pray.
One: We come together to praise God in word and song.
All: And yet, Almighty God whispers in the silences as well.
One: We come together to listen and hear.
All: We pray to understand,
One: To experience and remember
All: the abundance of God’s grace.

Opening Prayer

Hymn 461 * “God Is Here”

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Lesson (Unison) Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work–you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.

Time with Children

Song “Jesus Loves Me”

Unison Prayer of Confession followed by Personal Silent Confession

Lord of Life, you call us to rest, but we are too busy working. You call us to offer rest to others, but we are too busy demanding. You call us to remember that you are always at work in our lives, but we are too busy worrying. Forgive our constant striving and our obsession with work. Remind us that our value comes from you, not from anything we produce or how productive we appear to others. Teach us the rhythms of your grace, and grant us rest for our weary souls. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith (in unison) The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
