Welcome And Opening Prayer

Prelude            Voluntary on Woodlands                  J. Wayne Kerr

Responsive Call to Worship based on Psalm 107

One Voice: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.

Many Voices: Let the people of the Lord say so, those rescued from trouble!

One Voice: Let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.

Many Voices: Let us praise the Lord with one voice!

Hymn It is Well with my Soul

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll,
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul.”

It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul.

My sin– O, the bliss of this glorious thought,
my sin– not in part but the whole,
is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend:
“Even so”– it is well with my soul.”

Call to Confession

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” If you seek peace of body, mind, and spirit, be in the habit of confession, for in forgiveness, there is rest.

Confession of Sin

Gracious God, we confess that when we are afraid, we do not always turn to you. We turn to other things that are not of your Spirit. We ask for forgiveness, but we also ask for strength to resist when the things we would turn to would take over our lives. It’s not just wisdom we need. It’s power. In your Spirit, we are not powerless. We are powerful. By your grace, guide us in right paths for your name’s sake. (Please continue in silent prayer, personalizing the prayer for yourself.)

Assurance of Pardon

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9 Believe the good news of the gospel, in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Prayer for Illumination

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen

First Scripture Reading (Unison) 1 Samuel 17: 43-45

The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the field.” But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Second  Scripture Reading Mark 4:26-34

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Affirmation of Faith* Romans 8:38-39

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Offertory          Prelude in E Minor  Frédéric Chopin

Doxology Lasst uns erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;
Alleluia, Alleluia.
Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Pastoral Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Hymn God of Grace and God of Glory

God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your power;
crown your ancient Church’s story,
bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.

Lo! the hosts of evil round us
scorn your Christ, assail his ways!
Fears and doubts too long have bound us–
free our hearts to work and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the living of these days,
for the living of these days.

Heal your children’s warring madness,
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal,
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Save us from weak resignation
to the evils we deplore;
let the gift of your salvation
be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
serving you whom we adore,
serving you whom we adore.

Benediction
