Responsive Call to Worship

One: There are many who would claim our allegiance.

Many: But Jesus calls us to love God and serve God only.

One: There are many who promise the world if we but follow them.

Many: Jesus calls us to follow him.

One: And where does he lead you?

All: Out. To proclaim the sovereignty of God that all might joyfully serve God together.

One: So then, why do you gather here?

All: To worship God and to be nourished for the journey.

One: May God bless our worship and our journey together!

Call to Confession

Confession of Sin

Gracious God, too often we go it alone needlessly. Seeking help can be interpreted as weakness in our culture. So we don’t. In your kingdom, you call us to live in joyful, creative community–with you and with each other. This is your vision for us, but we do not live into it. Forgive us our stubbornness and our foolishness. Give us wisdom. Replace our judgment and condemnation–for others and ourselves–with compassion, gentleness, and with love. In humility, we pray. (Please continue in silent prayer, personalizing the prayer for yourself.)

Assurance of Pardon

Gloria Patri

Prayer for Illumination in Unison

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen

First Scripture Reading 2 Corinthians 12:5-10

On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Second Scripture Reading Mark 6:6b-13

Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Sermon  “Reliance on God in Community” Rev. Robin Miller Currás

Affirmation of Faith

In Jesus Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself. Jesus Christ is God with humankind. He is the eternal Son…who became human and lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation. He is present in the church by the power of the Holy Spirit to continue and complete his mission. This work of [the Triune] God…is the foundation of all confessional statements about God, humanity, and the world. Therefore, the church calls all people to be reconciled to God and to one another.

Doxology

Pastoral Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
