PENTECOST

Welcome and Announcements

Prelude Send Us Your Spirit         David Haas

Responsive Call to Worship    Romans 8:12-17

One: So then, brothers and sisters, we are obligated, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh

All: for if we live according to the flesh, we will die, but if by the Spirit we put to death the deeds of the body, we will live.

One: For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption.

All: When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if we in fact suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Scripture Lesson (In Unison) 1 Kings 19:11-13a

Elijah has fled from Jezebel after the defeat of the false prophets on Mount Carmel. He has run to Horeb at the LORD’s insistence.

The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind, and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake, and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession

Gracious and loving God, Your Holy Spirit is always with us. You encourage and strengthen us, and You send us out to serve You. Your grace is sufficient for every need, yet we often doubt Your presence. We wonder where You are in all that happens in this world. We struggle with trusting wholeheartedly in Your love, power, and goodness. We fail to keep our hearts centered and our minds focused on the good news of Jesus, the Crucified and Risen One. Forgive us. Rescue us. Empower us. As Your redeemed children, may we seek to do Your will to Your name’s great glory. Through Christ we pray. Amen.

Hymn Red 295*                 Breathe on Me, Breath of God

Affirmation of Faith (responsive)

One: What do you believe when you confess your faith in the Holy Spirit?

All: That apart from the Holy Spirit, our Lord can neither be loved, nor known, nor served. The Holy Spirit is the personal bond by which Jesus Christ unites us to himself, the teacher who opens our hearts to Christ, and the comforter who leads us to repentance, empowering us to live in Christ’s service
