Printable Bulletin

Meeting in the Chapel at Union Congregational, 76 Cooper Avenue, Upper Montclair.

Serving people, through Christ, to meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of the community and the world around us.

Welcome

Prelude, “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”, Sebastian Temple

*Responsive Call to Worship, Psalm 19:7-11
ONE: The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
ALL: The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
ONE: The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.
ALL: They are more precious than gold, even much fine gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Opening Prayer

*Hymn, “This is the Day That the Lord Hath Made”

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading (In Unison), Exodus 20:1-11
Then God spoke all these words, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them…You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work…For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it.”

Time with the Children

*Passing of the Peace

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession followed by time of Silent Confession
Lord, we come before you honestly and humbly. We admit we have desires for earthly gains often before desiring to know you better. We struggle to be content with our spouse, our house, our lot in life, and we have a tendency to want what’s not ours. We struggle to honor the sabbath rest you so want for us: between demanding bosses, coaches, families and schedules. Lord, this is hard. We struggle to honor our parents, especially when we think we know better, or they have shown their imperfections. We struggle to speak truth, with grace, for this and so much more.
We ask: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Silent Confession.

Assurance of Forgiveness

*Glory Be to God in Song, Hymn 582, “Glory to God”
Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me,
and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me,
and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.
World without end, without end. Amen. (sing 3 times)

Scripture Lesson, Exodus 20:12-20

Sermon, Play “In Bounds”, Pastor Cindy

*Hymn 822, “Pues Si Vivimos”
(We will be singing the first verse in Spanish, and the remaining in English.)

*Affirmation of Faith(in unison), The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Introduction to the Offering

Offertory, “Dona nobis pacem”, Anon., arr. Eric T. Myers

*Doxology, “Lasst Uns Erfreuen”
Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;
Alleluia, Alleluia.
Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Prayer of Dedication

Celebration of The Lord’s Supper
(Please note that gluten-free bread is served and water can be requested instead of grape juice.)

Pastoral Prayers, followed by The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
