Think About These Things Spring 2022

In Philippians 4:8 the Apostle Paul writes, “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Here are a few of the things that members of the Grace community have been reading, watching, and listening to that have helped them follow Paul’s exhortation.

Poetry

In observance of National Poetry Month in April we asked the Grace community to recommend some favorite poems.

Books

Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie, Good Enough: 40ish Devotionals for a Life of Imperfection: I heard about this book too late to recommend it as a Lenten devotional but 40ish is the perfect number. From the book sleeve, we read, “In these gorgeously written reflections, Bowler and Richie show how fresh imagination for truth, beauty, and meaning can be discovered amid the chaos of life.” I first heard her on On Being with Krista Tippet and her honesty, faith, and spirit made me want to invite her over for dinner and some real conversation. I’m including some of her blessings in my Lenten practice of sharing blessings with you. Pastor Robin Miller Currás

The Grace upon Grace team encourages you to patronize local independent bookstores when you buy books. Movie

King Richard: I highly recommend the movie King Richard, about the father of Venus and Serena Williams, who, together with his wife, Oracene Price, raised a family of five girls with discipline and love. He was especially tireless in his pursuit of success for his two gifted daughters, both of whom became world-famous tennis champions. Will Smith offers a winning performance as the “ruler” of his family, who occasionally needs to be restrained. But he valiantly overcomes many challenges in the society of his time and the business-oriented tennis world. He is a deft coach and manager. You will enjoy this movie, I am sure. Sandra Duguid

Organizations

Pockets of Light: Despite being relatively common, pregnancy and infant loss are not often openly discussed. Pockets of Light is an organization in Montclair that offers support groups and individual counseling to those who have experienced pregnancy loss and infant loss. Their programs are throughout the year and each October they hold an outdoor candle lighting ceremony on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day (October 15). Emily Rishel
